Debromination of Decabromodiphenyl Ether (BDE 209) in Human and Fish Liver Microsomes

چکیده
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame retardant chemicals that are now considered a new class of persistent organic pollutants. Over the past thirty years, the levels of PBDEs have been increasing rapidly in a variety of environmental compartments and in human tissues (Hites 2004). Presently, two of the three commercial mixtures of PBDEs (pentaBDE and octaBDE) are either banned from use or voluntarily phased out of production and it is therefore anticipated that levels of PBDEs will decrease in the environment. However, use of the third commercial mixture, decaBDE, remains unrestricted. Several studies have demonstrated that decaBDE can be reductively dehalogenated to congeners present in the pentaBDE and octaBDE commercial mixtures via photodegradation (Eriksson et al. 2004; Soderstrom et al. 2004; Ahn et al. 2006), biodegradation (Gerecke et al. 2005; He et al. 2006) and biotransformation (Kierkegaard et al. 1999; Stapleton et al. 2004; Tomy et al. 2004).

Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) isthe major component in the flame-retardant formulation DecaBDE which is incorporated into numerous consumer goods ranging from upholsteries to electronics. Because of the high volume of DecaBDE produced, its presence in consumer products and the environment, and the finding of BDE-209 in the blood of exposed workers, the extent of bioavailability, persistence...
متن کاملBirnessite mediated debromination of decabromodiphenyl ether.
Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) is a major component of a commercial flame retardant formulation; however, there is limited information on the fate of BDE-209 in the environment, including metal oxide mediated degradation. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the birnessite (delta-MnO(2))-promoted debromination of BDE-209 in tetrahydrofuran (THF)-water systems as well as catec...
متن کاملEffect of copper ion and soil humic acid on biodegradation of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE‐209) by Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a good environmental microorganism capable of degrading decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209). This paper studied the effect of Cu2+ and humic acid (HA) extracted from e-waste contaminated soils on biodegradation of BDE-209 by P. aeruginosa. The adsorption isotherms of Cu2+ on HA, the crude enzyme activity, cell surface morphology, and biodegradation pathway were also inve...
متن کاملReductive debromination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in anaerobic sediment and a biomimetic system.
Because of the bioaccumulation of penta- and tetrapolybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants in biota, the environmental biotransformation of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) is of interest. BDE-209 accounts for more than 80% by mass of PBDE production and is the dominant PBDE in sediments. Most sediments are anaerobic and reports of microbial reductive dehalogenation of hydrophobic ...

There is large usage of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) especially for decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209, Deca-BDE) in controlling the risks of fire. The toxicological effects of PBDEs are worth being concerned about. Female SD rats were daily gavaged with BDE-209 ether at the dose of 100 mg/kg for 20 days. Histological observation was performed for the screening of the target organs for ...

A rhizobox experiment was conducted to investigate degradation of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) in the rhizosphere of ryegrass and the influence of root colonization with an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus. BDE-209 dissipation in soil varied with its proximity to the roots and was enhanced by AM inoculation. A negative correlation (P < 0.001, R(2) = 0.66) was found between the residual B...
